Since most bathroom visits only require a half flush, the Environmental Protection Agency estimates that, homes can save up to 4,000 gallons of water annually by switching to dual flush toilets.
When you use less water, you save money. Equipping your home with dual flush toilets will ultimately lower your water bill and benefit the environment.
For guests who have never seen the high and low volume flush buttons, using a dual-flush toilet for the first time could cause confusion. On some models, the buttons are not clearly labeled, so be sure to instruct house guests and family members how to flush properly.
For years of trouble-free service from your new dual flush toilet, there’s no substitute for a professional installation.
You can find dual flush toilets at all major plumbing and home improvement retailers in person and online, but be sure to check reviews before settling on one.
For toilet installation services, reach out to your local Roto-Rooter Branch.

When jewelry goes down a drain, it's usually a bathroom sink drain. A woman might drop a ring or an earring while doing hair or applying makeup, while a man might drop a tie tack in the same way. If an item falls into an open sink drain, don't run water into the drain. Water could push the item beyond your reach. Without water flowing into the drain, the item will remain in the P trap, which is the J-shaped pipe beneath your sink. You'll need to disassemble the P trap in order to recover the item. But first, there's a shortcut if you have a Wet/Dry Shop-Vac. Don't use a regular vacuum, you could be electrocuted. Remove the pop-up stopper assembly if it isn't out already. Carefully stretch a nylon stocking over the end of the Shop-Vac hose. Hold it tightly in place. Then, place the stocking-covered hose end over the drain hole, and turn on the Shop-Vac. Wait a few seconds, then lift the hose away from the drain. With luck, your jewelry will be sticking to the stocking. The Shop-Vac technique works best on small and lightweight items, such as earrings. But if the Shop-Vac isn't strong enough to suck up heavier jewelry, you'll need to remove the P trap beneath the sink. First, grab a bucket and put on some rubber gloves. Next, check to see if you have the type of P trap that can be disassembled by hand or if you're going to need tools. A good set of Channellock pliers works best, but any wrench that can get around the release will work too. Loosen the nut and carefully pull the pipe assembly apart. Pour out the water into your bucket. The jewelry should fall right into your bucket. Reassemble the pipe, and tighten it securely. If your lost item is not inside the P trap, that means it has traveled into the branch line, or maybe even into the main sewer. If so, don't run water or flush toilets anywhere in the house. Do you have to jiggle the flush handle to make it stop? Have you noticed rippling water in the bowl? These are signs that your toilet is leaking water right down the drain. The most common reason a toilet leaks is that the flapper valve is worn out or damaged. A bad flapper valve can also cause a toilet to flush by itself, a condition known as \"ghost flushing.\" A flapper valve is a pliable rubber seal that opens like a lid to allow water into the toilet bowl when the toilet is flushed. The flapper valve then slowly lowers over the valve seat to seal off water flow when the flush has completed. A new flapper is soft and flexible but over time, hard water minerals and in-tank cleaning products will damage the rubber causing it to lose its pliability. This prevents the flapper from forming a tight seal over the valve seat. To replace a flapper valve, first you need to shut-off your water supply valve behind the toilet. Turn it clockwise. Next, remove the lid from the tank...then flush the toilet to remove as much water as possible from the tank. Disconnect the lift chain from the flush lever. The next step is to pull the flapper from the pivot arm mount pegs on the overflow tube. Wipe off the seal on the valve seat to ensure a good seal. Next, line-up your new flapper valve with the pegs on the overflow tube, positioning the flapper over the drain. Clip the chain to the flush lever, leaving some slack in the chain. Then push down on the flush lever to make sure the flapper's range of motion is right. You may have to adjust the chain a time or two to get it right. It's time to turn-on the water supply again and let the toilet tank re-fill. The flapper valve should form a tight seal that prevents water from escaping the tank and draining into the bowl. Once you're satisfied the flapper is not leaking, replace the tank lid and discard the old flapper valve. If replacing the flapper doesn't stop the leak, the drain seat itself might be bad or the top surface is corroded and isn't allowing the flapper valve to get a good seal. Replacing the fill valve and other tank parts may also be necessary to stop a leak. One mistake we see in many households is that they are equipped with the wrong type of toilet plunger.","transcript":"Toilet clogged? Let Roto-Rooter show you how to plunge it like a pro.
\nJust about everyone has faced a clogged toilet at one time or another. It can be a stressful situation when you push the flush handle but the bowl won’t drain. It gets worse if the toilet bowl continues to fill and threatens to overflow.
\nThe moment you realize the toilet isn’t draining and the bowl is filling, the first thing you need to do is prevent an overflow.
\nFirst, remove the tank lid and, depending on what kind of toilet you have, lift the ball float or fill valve. Water will immediately stop filling the tank. But to stop water from flowing from the tank into the bowl, remove the water line from the overflow tube or push down on the flapper valve.
\nNext, turn off the water shut-off valve behind the toilet. This will prevent more water from reaching the toilet.
\nNow you’re ready to deal with the toilet blockage but make sure you have the right plunger. The red shallow cupped model is actually a sink plunger so it’s not very effective on toilets. But the black plunger is specifically designed for toilets. It has a deeper cup and a flange at the bottom that seals around toilet drains.
\nA toilet plunger works by forcing pressure against the blockage in the toilet's U-trap. The force should push the clog out so the bowl can drain.
\nRemember, you need water in the bowl to plunge effectively so if the bowl is empty, allow more water to flow into the bowl before plunging.
\nNow grasp the plunger with both hands and seat it carefully around the drain in order to create a good seal. Then give the plunger several forceful thrusts. Ten or twelve rapid thrusts will usually clear out most soft clogs. You may have to repeat the process several times to break up stubborn clogs.
\nIf the blockage is solid, like a child’s toy, the plunger may or may not dislodge it. And if the clog is beyond the toilet, deep inside the branch drain or main sewer, a toilet plunger won’t help.
\nTo clear a major clog, call a plumber. If your problem is serious, a plumber is well equipped to deal with any issues involving your home’s drain system.

Remember, if you run into trouble, a Roto-Rooter plumber is only a click or call away. ♪ Call Roto-Rooter, that's the name, and away go troubles down the drain. Roto-Rooter! ♪

\nDual flush toilets give the user a choice of two buttons for flushing waste. One button delivers the full 1.6 gallon tank capacity for flushing solid waste. The other button serves up a half flush or a 0.8 gallons to rid the bowl of liquid waste.

Most backups are caused by hair. You can prevent hair clogs by placing a catch screen over the drain. Many attach with suction cups, and will stop hair strands from going down the drain. If you don't use a shower strainer, we recommend cleaning the drain monthly. First, put on some rubber gloves. Next, remove the drain cover, then straighten a wire coat hanger and bend the end into a small hook. Push it down into the shower drain several inches, then twist it around so it can grab any hair clogs. Pull it out and remove the hair into a trash can. Repeat the process going deeper each time and adjusting the size of your hook. Be sure to hang on tightly to the hanger so that it doesn't get stuck in the drain. Next, run some water down the drain to see if it's draining quickly. Then, repeat the entire process again.
