Clean your dishwasher in 5 simple steps:
\nEvery water heater should be equipped with a temperature and pressure relief valve. This is a crucial safety device that is mandated by all plumbing codes and should never be removed or disabled. I'm Dave Jones, Master Plumber for Roto-Rooter Plumbing & Drain Service. I'm gonna discuss problems that sometimes occur with the temperature and pressure relief valves on the water heaters. Relief valves discharge for usually two reasons: 1, there's excessive pressure building up inside the system that is exceeding 150 pounds of pressure. Or 2, the temperature inside the tank is exceeding 210 degrees Fahrenheit. Both of these situations can be very dangerous and the temperature and pressure relief valve will open to prevent an explosion. If you notice water on the floor around the water heater and there's no evidence of a tank or plumbing leak, it is probably a sign that the water heater's temperature and pressure relief valve has recently opened and relieved itself. First you should test the water pressure in the house by using a pressure gauge that you will screw right onto a hose bib or a faucet. You could pick up one of these gauges at any home center. Most plumbing codes state that the maximum water pressure coming in the house should be 80 PSI or less. If the water pressure exceeds this amount, a pressure reducing valve will need to be installed on the water main. Note that the ideal water pressure is between 50 and 60 PSI. You want to make sure that the thermostat is not set too high. If the thermostat is set to high or if it's faulty, the T&P valve will discharge to relieve the pressure inside the tank. Remember for a standard water heater the temperature should be set at 120 degrees Fahrenheit. You could try flushing the T&P valve to make sure it didn't become filled by sediment. It's a good idea to test the T&P valve at least once a year to make sure its operating properly. Simply place a bucket beneath the discharge tube. You'll want to flip open the relief valve and let it run for about five seconds to make sure it opens fully. Stand back and don't do this if you're barefoot or wearing a open-toed shoes or sandals. If that hot water splashes out, you could be burned. Remember the T&P valve is the only thing that prevent your water heater from becoming a bomb. Once the valve snaps back, make sure it doesn't leak. If it does, you'll need to replace the valve. Next, check to make sure the expansion tank above the water heater hasn't failed. You can do this by removing the cap. It's located on top of the tank, and press in the Schrader valve. This is the same type of air valve that you'll find on tires. To see if air or water comes out of it. If water is expelled from the valve, then the tank needs to be replaced. I hope this is helpful and you have a better understanding of the temperature and pressure relief valve on your water heater. I'm Dave Jones, Master Plumber with Roto-Rooter. Thanks for watching. You'll learn about the benefits of having a battery backup system, or Venturi water-powered pump. When the groundwater level underneath your basement rises during periods of rain or thawing, it can pose a threat of flooding in low-lying areas. When the pit begins to fill, the float of the sump pump turns the pump on, keeping the water level underneath your house from rising too much. Your local Roto-Rooter plumber can help if you need a new system or simply want to learn more about a battery backup system for your current pump. Our Roto-Rooter plumbers can ensure your sump pump still works in the event of a power outage to increase flood prevention. Call us in case you'd like this service performed, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.","transcript":"If your home has a basement it probably has a sump pump installed in the lowest corner. If the pump is working properly, it will collect groundwater in a pit below the basement floor. When the pit begins to fill, a float switch triggers the sump pump to turn itself on, then pump the water out to a city storm sewer or the nearest drainage ditch. To ensure your sump pump is working, test it by pouring a few buckets of water into the pit. Make sure the pump turns on, empties most of the water from the pit, then turns itself off again. You'll notice that sump pumps require electricity to operate. That means if a storm knocks out power to your home, the sump pump can no longer do its job. But your Roto-Rooter plumber can install a battery backup system or a Venturi water-powered pump that will continue to pump away storm water and prevent flooding. Homeowners with some do-it-yourself skills should be able to handle many flood-prevention tasks on their own. But it's important to be careful and to recognize when you're in over your head. An easy upgrade to take your bathroom from lackluster to luxurious is a large rain showerhead. But is it as easy of a swap as you think?
\nHere are 3 things to know before purchasing a large rain showerhead.
\nFirst, consider increasing the water pressure in your shower. A larger showerhead requires more water pressure to produce the same amount of pressure you are familiar with getting with your smaller showerhead.
\nThe second topic to consider is upgrading you water heater. With more water being used, you will quickly go through your hot water reserve. You may want to upgrade your water heater or invest in a second water heater.
\nIncreasing your water pressure and upgrading your water heater brings us to the third consideration. Be prepared for your water bill to increase. Prepare your finances to adjust to the change.

You flip the switch and hear a buzzing sound but it won’t work. Or worse, you hear nothing at all and the disposal seems to be dead. Before you call a plumber, let Roto-Rooter show you how to un-jam a garbage disposal like a plumber.
\nIf the disposal is not making a humming sound, it has probably overheated and tripped a breaker on the unit itself or in the circuit breaker box. The reset button is just a local circuit breaker so the first and most obvious thing to do is to push the re-set button on the bottom of the disposal.
\nAfter turning off the power switch, press the reset button on the bottom. Turn the power switch back on. If the disposal won’t run and isn’t making a humming noise, check to see if it tripped a circuit breaker in your home’s breaker box. Sometimes resetting the circuit breaker takes care of the problem but if the disposal is humming, it probably tripped the breaker in the first place because something is preventing the disposal’s flywheel from turning. In other words, it’s jammed.
\nNow this is the point where a lot of people simply give up and call Roto-Rooter for help but watch closely because there are still some things you can try on your own before you call a professional.
\nYour garbage disposal probably came with a key for clearing jams, which for most brands is just a quarter inch hex wrench. Check to see if you have one in your tool box. Again, make sure the power switch is turned off then insert the hex wrench into the center hole at the bottom of the disposal and turn the wrench back and forth. This should free the flywheel and clear the jam.
\nMost jams are caused by seeds or other hard materials such as a seed or bone lodged between the flywheel and the housing. Some disposals don’t have the hole in the bottom but you can still clear the jam by using a dowel rod or the end of a wooden kitchen spoon. After making sure the disposal’s power switch is off, push the dowel into the drain hole and hold it firmly against one of the impeller arms. Then push it in the counter-clockwise direction. This accomplishes the same thing from the top of the disposal as the jam key does from the bottom.
\nOnce the jam is cleared, be sure to let the water run long enough to wash the obstruction down the drain. Avoid putting your hand inside the disposal. If you need to extract something from it, try using a pair of pliers instead.
\nIf you’ve tried all of these fixes and the disposal still isn’t working, it’s time to call in a professional. Your local Roto-Rooter plumber provides fast 24-hour service 7 days a week.

Food particles trapped in the disposer are the most likely cause. Run the water, then turn on the disposer. Watch as one of our Master Plumbers shows you how to test your water heater's pressure valve and keep your home's hot water system functioning properly. In addition to testing the pressure release valve on your water heater, keep your thermostat set at a safe temperature, and flush your water heater annually. This will allow you to keep your system in good working condition and spot any minor problems before they become major issues.","transcript":"Every water heater should be equipped with a temperature and pressure relief valve.

However, sometimes, it requires just a little extra effort. Watch as our professional plumbers offer quick and easy tips for fixing your clogged garbage disposal. If these steps won't unclog your garbage disposal, we're here to help. With our FAQ, and kitchen tips and maintenance information, finding even more tips is simple. Plus, because our team is available around the clock 24 hours a day, seven days a week nights, holidays and weekends you can always get the professional plumbing services you need when you need them.","transcript":"The GM garbage disposal is something most of us have experienced. First, press the reset button at the bottom of the disposal. If that doesn't work, turn off the power switch then shut off power at the circuit breaker. Find the keyhole on the bottom of the disposal, it should be at the center. Insert the GM key or a hex wrench and move it back and forth. Turn on the power and test. Finally, some plumbing problems are best left with an experienced plumber. Know your limits and be careful when you're working on plumbing fixtures. And remember, an experienced Roto-Rooter professional is only a phone call away. [Roto-Rooter jingle]
